Fourth Grade: 2D Geometric Design

Since the fourth graders have been working with geometry I thought making designs with a geometric focus would be fun.  Before starting the project we talked about the art elements color, line and shape.  After looking at some examples of geometric art and discussing organic vs inorganic shapes the students were ready to get out the rulers, protractors and pencils and get to it!

When they had a pencil sketch they were happy with they used black sharpie pens to trace over the entire design before using watercolor pencils to fill in the shapes.  Before they started  adding color we had a brief discussion on how the use of color blocking, color/value contrast and neat work could enhance their design.

After they were finished coloring with the pencils they had the option of using a paint brush and water to smooth out the pencil lines and create a watercolor effect.

 Here are some examples of the finished designs.  I think they look fabulous!

Retro Flowers
 
The final project for the first graders was inspired by the work of Eloise Renouf.  Her style is inspired by mid 20th century prints and textiles.  The students were given squares of card stock in a limited color palette which they trimmed to make the basic shapes for their flowers and leaves.  They could choose to layer multiple shapes or use colored pencils to make their flowers more elaborate.  Black sharpies were used to add the stems and additional patterns.

First Grade: Cityscapes

During the third art class the first graders viewed a variety of buildings looking for elements of art - specifically geometric shapes.  They were given brightly colored paper circles, squares and rectangles to create a simple cityscape.  Although they were encouraged to keep the design primarily geometric they could cut the paper to make detail elements if they desired.

Creative Abstract 3D Cityscape

First Grade: Line, Shape, Pattern

On the first day of art class the first graders learned/reviewed the elements of art: color, line and shape and practiced patterning.  On the second week the focus was geometric shapes.  They were given black, white and grey paper circles and squares to create an abstract collage.  If they wanted a triangle or a different size square they could use scissors to create one.  After gluing all the pieces to a white background they had the choice of adding a few patterns with a black sharpie.
